I love the story of Philip and Nathanael in John 1:43-50.
Philip, having met the Christ, searched out his friend Nathanael. He shared his testimony, focusing on who Jesus is. When Nathanael answered with skepticism, Philip did not argue. Rather, he responded with an invitation—come and see—and let Jesus speak for Himself.
Too often, rather than just letting Jesus show Himself as we invite others to meet Him, we insist on on doing so much speaking that we don't give room for our friends to hear Jesus speak to them directly.
There is a time to be a voice for Jesus. There is also a time to point to Jesus and say, “Go ask Him yourself.” Let's learn the value of speaking and the value of silence.
May God grant us the wisdom to know the time for each and the courage to put it to use.
