(1 John 1:5, Psalm 27:1, John 1:9, John 8:12)

Did you know that we have a special part of our eye that is designed to detect light? That light becomes our vision. Obviously, there is a purely physical purpose to that. However, God is a pretty amazing God and does nothing by accident. The physical is a reflection of the spiritual.

I believe God designed these cells not just to give us physical sight, but to remind us that we are to see God everywhere we look. If we walk around with our physical eyes closed, we will not perceive the light around us or what it reveals. In the same way, if we walk around with our spiritual eyes closed, we will miss seeing God. We often see what we look for.

I remember a trip to Costco with my son. We were playing a game of Find-It. I’d give him something to look for and he would call out when he found it—the color purple, a flower, a nine, and so forth. When we got down the list to lightbulbs, he initially complained that there was not a single lightbulb in the whole store. Obviously that was not true, considering that we were not shopping in the dark! After a little prompting, he found his first lightbulb. After the first one, he kept seeing them everywhere he looked. He finally noticed the lamp aisle, the overhead lights, the massive packs of lightbulbs—he saw lightbulbs not just in the store, but everywhere for the rest of the day. Once he started noticing them, they were easy to spot.

If you are having trouble seeing God, ask Him to help you perceive Him. God never leaves or forsakes us. (Psalm 37:28, Psalm 94:14, Matthew 10:29, Matthew 28:20, Romans 8:35-39) He is always present. (Psalm 139, Proverbs 15:3) It is only our ability to see Him that is lacking. Open your eyes and begin looking for evidence of Him. Ask Him to adjust your spiritual sight to perceive His light. Before you know it, your spiritual eyes will sense the light of His presence everywhere you look. His presence will become the revealer and interpreter of everything around you.

God is light.
