I don’t know if this is so, but it is a thought that has encouraged me. Credit where credit is due—I began thinking about this after watching an episode of The Chosen. I know that’s controversial, so even if you hate the series, keep reading. I promise this isn’t an apologetic for a tv series!

In this particular episode, the writers added some imaginative material that is not found in Scripture. Jesus has been asked to read in the Synagogue (that part is in the Bible), and He takes some of His disciples to pick out the scroll with Him. He asks them what they think He should read. When one suggests the Creation story, He responds along the lines of, “That is a favorite memory of mine.”

So, all that to say, that is a fictional, extra-biblical scene. It is not doctrine.

However, that got my attention. As I was reading my Bible over the next long while, I noticed how often God mentions the same miracles. There are some He rarely brings up again and others He talks about a lot.

There may be many reasons. It is possible, for example, that He brings up the parting of the Red Sea because that is arguably the beginning of Israel as a nation and He is reminding His people that He has been there from their beginning. It may be that the prophets He used held the miracle in such high esteem that He allowed them to express His power and intent through their own favorite miracle of His.

I wonder though whether God may have favorite memories. I wonder if parting the Red Sea so His people were delivered was such a delight to Him that He reflects on it with a smile. Maybe He remembers the looks on their faces or the relief that flooded their souls. I don’t know. We won’t know for sure until we get to Heaven, and maybe not then. The mind of God is a divine mystery in many ways.

If it is true that God has favorite memories, I wonder how I can give Him a favorite memory today. Can I love Him with such a whole heart that He is delighted in my company today? Can I serve Him today in such a way that He smiles? Can I extend the grace of God to another human today so that God looks down and says, “Look! She’s starting to look like my Son, Jesus. She’s being transformed into His image! I am so happy when I see all my children starting to look alike!” Can I take time to read His word carefully and joyfully, so that He is pleased to see me reading the letter He wrote for me?

This is just a devotional thought—a theological maybe. I am not asking anyone to take this as a point of doctrine. I just think today would be a little holier, a little more joyful, a little more filled with the Spirit of God, if we were to ask ourselves, “How could I give God a favorite memory today?”

This is a “maybe” thought.
